Opioid Epidemic Impact on Children in Appalachia: Free Workshop at Ohio Southern

Ohio University Southern is hosting a special workshop series for area workforce employees on the frontlines of the opioid epidemic and those that work with families and children. Join us for “Opioid Epidemic Impact on Children in Appalachia,” funded by a Rural Business Development grant from the USDA. This workshop is geared for people who work with children and families, including foster care and social workers, counselors, first responders, children’s services workers, nurses, teachers and others.

Presenters:
Wendy Welch, Ph.D.- author of Fall or Fly: The Strangely Hopeful Story of Foster Care and Adoption in Appalachia. Dr. Welch will discuss the foster care system, and the strengths and limitations of policy that guides it; people who can impact change in systems that are not working; advocacy related to foster care and supports for children impacted by opioids; and, more.

Kristi Whitaker, Special Education Assistant and Jalina Wheeler, Counselor- Russell-McDowell Elementary School. KRUSH- Kids Rising Up Through Support and Healing is a special program designed to support children whose parents are incarcerated or impacted by the opioid crisis.
