Local United Way to host state’s first free financial empowerment training

Organization selected for ‘intensive support’ by Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—This month, United Way of the River Cities’ Financial Stability Partnership will become the first organization in the Mountain State to host Your Money, Your Goals, a financial empowerment training for social service programs. The free training and technical assistance offered by the United State Government’s Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is for case managers and others who serve economically vulnerable populations and will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 23 at Mountwest Community and Technical College.

“Your Money, Your Goals is a toolkit for frontline staff that will help their clients become financial stable and that this is an integral part of the solution for our communities,” said Rachel Houston, director of United Way of the River Cities’ Financial Stability Partnership. “The more we learn about our population, the more we understand how providing basic building blocks contribute to success.”

Houston said that the Financial Stability Partnership’ was ranked second behind Los Angeles to receive the intensive, in-person, train-the-trainer instruction. “It’s a privilege to receive such special interest from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.”

The Your Money, Your Goals cohort began in 2017 when the bureau selected 30 organizations nationwide to offer the training. This year, United Way of the River Cities will be among the 61 organizations to receive consumer education materials, training that prepares your organization to train staff, volunteers, or other community partners, and technical assistance to integrate financial empowerment and capability strategies into their existing service delivery model.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided during the day-long session. Registration is required and can be completed by visiting the Your Money, Your Goals event at www.unitedwayrivercities.org.
