Threats to WV Tobacco Prevention Funding

As policymakers consider budget options one proposal which has recently been suggested would eliminate all tobacco control and education funding.  If this proposal is successful all funding going into youth programs, cessation and local initiatives will go away.

With 40% cut from these programs over the past several years this could be the final blow to West Virginia’s tobacco control efforts. This would destroy programming which already does not meet minimum CDC recommendations.

The Coalition for a Tobacco-Free West Virginia (CTFWV) and our partner organizations urge supporters of tobacco prevention and control to contact your legislators urging them to NOT CUT TOBACCO CONTROL EFFORTS IN WEST VIRGINIA!

  • Tobacco control funding in West Virginia is already below the $27.4 million recommended by CDC.
  • Implementation of any funding cut will cripple our community-based and youth targeted interventions which are important to break down cultural barriers to tobacco control and set the stage to prevent another generation of tobacco users.
  • Tobacco costs the over $1 billion dollars a year in health care costs and lost productivity. Dollars spent on tobacco control now will result in saving in the future and is good for our state and our economy.
